‘Think Global, Act Local’: 8th STEP gathers Islamic world scientists

Six scientific figures attended a discussion in the 8th Science and Technology Exchange Program (STEP) held on October 20 during the 2021 Mustafa(Pbuh) Prize Week at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Six scientists, including a 2021 Mustafa Prize laureate, discussed the topic of “Think Global, Act Local” at the Universal Scientific Education and Research Network (USERN) Scientific Gathering.

Mohamed El. Sayegh, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the American University of Beirut from Lebanon; Altuğ Özpineci, Vice-Chairperson Middle East Technical University from Turkey; Md Amin Md Taff, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) from Malaysia; Faridul Alam, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Health Sciences; Mohd Roslan Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia; and Mustafa Naziroğlu, from Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi of Turkey were the participants of the event.

Firstly, the representative of USERN introduced the activities of the network in Iran and around the world for the participants.

Afterwards, Mohamed El. Sayegh, a 2021 Mustafa Prize laureate from Islmaic countries for “Novel Therapies to Improve Renal and Cardiac Allograft Outcomes” made a speech.

He discussed the local action influencing global strategy for COVID-19, emphasizing the eradication of COVID-19 with global vaccination.

Sayegh also discussed challenges on geopolitical, economical, and cultural levels. He mentioned the mix and match, Lebanese fusion studied at the American University of Beirut.

Md Amin Md Taff, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), introduced the university, talking about the faculties and leading centers.

Altuğ Özpineci, Vice-Chairperson of Middle East Technical University was the next speaker. He talked about different kinds of exotic nuclei, which can be produced in colliders.

Mohd Roslan Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) talked about the university’s vision, niche area, and mission.

Mustafa Naziroğlu, from Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi of Turkey, also talked about transient receptor potential (TRP) proteins.

Finally, Professor Faridul Alam, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Health Sciences introduces the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences.

On the final section of the event, Sayegh and Özpineci were appointed to the USERN Advisory Board. The representatives of Tehran University of Medical Sciences signed MoU with Bangladesh University of Health Sciences and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris.
